Birds are complicated creatures and an incomplete understanding of their physical, nutritional, physiological, and psychological needs often leads to long-term, inadequate care. Owners should evaluate their bird's movement, body posture, head position, behavior, appetite, attitude, ocular clarity, and excrement output on a daily basis. This information will help the veterinarian identify abnormalities before a disease or illness has a chance to progress.

In the wild, birds normally attempt to hide signs of disease as a survival adaptation. Consequently a bird will be sick for some time before the owner realizes that something is wrong. A wellness exam for birds includes taking swabs from the throat and feces and checking the microflora (natural bacteria that support the immune system to maintain proper health) under the microscope, Hematocrit, and de-worming. A Psittacosis test is highly recommended for new birds and does not need to be repeated unless the bird has been exposed to other birds that have an unknown Psittacosis status. A general blood work is recommended for older birds. General grooming of the nails, wings, and beak will be performed during the exam if necessary.
